ABC News reports that what began as invasion of privacy in a dorm room at New Jersey’s Rutgers University has spiraled into the tragic suicide of 18-year-old freshman Clementi. Ravi and Wei are under suspicion for sending live video of Tyler Clementi in a gay act without Clementi’s permission or knowledge. Soon after his horrific online outing, Tyler Clementi signed off on Facebook and signed out of life by jumping off a bridge.
Caution of goodbye originated from Tyler Clementi
September 22 was when every person got their farewell from Clementi on his Facebook. He updated his status to say, “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry,” at 8:42 p.m. The body of Clementi has not been discovered yet, but there was a body discovered just north of the bridge on the Hudson River. New Jersey authorities were the ones to discover the body. Clementi’s Rutgers University ID was found in a wallet nearby. There was also his driver’s license contained in the wallet.
Paul Mainardi, attorney for the Clementi family, verified Tyler Clementi’s suicide via a statement in which the young man is praised for his outstanding personal qualities and his distinguished musicianship.
Remarks arriving as, ‘I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.’
Fellow Rutgers Scarlet Knights Dharun Ravi and Wei are imposed with two counts apiece of invasion of privacy for broadcasting Tyler Clementi’s homosexual encounter via iChat, based on prosecutor Bruce Kaplan. There was a remark made by Ravi about this. He said on Twitter:
“Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Two days following the original broadcast, Ravi tweeted again:
“Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it is happening again.”
Both Wei and Ravi get caught by law enforcement
Ravi and Wei have both left New Jersey police custody after surrendering themselves to the police. According to ABC News, Molly Wei was released on her own recognizance, when Dharun Ravi managed to post $25,000 bail. There can be more news to come.
