Salmonella egg recall expanding; Congress launches investigation

Congress interested in Salmonella egg recall that continues

An egg producer from Iowa is now a part of the recall. This was announced Friday showing more recall added to the list. Eggs are causing 1,000 individuals in 10 states to get sick from salmonella. The Food and Drug Administration reports that this is why there has been the recall. An investigation was launched by Congress because of the outbreak of salmonella. The FDA was given permission to come up with federal egg safety rules that started on July 9. The FDA has said that salmonella wouldn’t have even happened had the laws been in place already.

Violations normal for egg producer

The largest egg recall in recent history, as outlined by the FDA, started last week when Wright County Egg recalled 380 million eggs. One more 180 million eggs were recalled by Hillendale Farms. Quality Egg, supplied by Hillendale, was shown to have salmonella cases by the FDA. Monday was the day the House Energy and Commerce Committee asked for documents from the business. CNN reported this. Wright County Egg and Quality Egg are owned by the exact same person. The Midwest and Northeast DeCoster agribusiness empire owns them both. DeCoster has always been shady. Many were concerned about the business and just how it was being run. 10 civil counts of animal cruelty in Maine were what Jack DeCoster was accused of. He pleaded guilty to these in June. In 1996, DeCoster was accused of having minors working in a sweatshop on a Maine chicken farm. He paid a $ 3.6 million fee because of this. In 2000, Iowa’s attorney general named DeCoster a “habitual violator” of state environmental laws following discharges of manure from hog-farming operations.

Safety rules for eggs

July 9 was when there was a change in who inspected egg producers. Until then, the responsibility was solely the USDA’s. Between May and July, there are 3 times more than normal reports of salmonella, which is about 2,000, reports the Center for Disease control. The Wall Street Journal reports the new change. Now the FDA and USDA share responsibility for inspecting. The new egg safety rules include requiring farms to test eggs and facilities for salmonella, protect feed and water from contamination and purchasing chicks and young hens from suppliers that monitor for salmonella. Farms have one year to change their standard.

Get your egg hot with salmonella

Consumers are being advised to throw out or take back eggs in cartons stamped with certain packing dates and location codes. The Los Angeles times reports that salmonella is always a concern when eating raw eggs. You won’t be able to easy find out if your egg has salmonella. It isn’t really detectable by taste, smell or looks. Many are getting salmonella poisoning from the way they cook their eggs. Generally it is contracted with hollandaise sauce or by eating sunny side up eggs. Cooking an egg all the way can really help. This will kill any bacteria from salmonella. The yolk needs to be cooked all the way. You’ll be fine if the egg is pasteurized. You may as well take the eggs back and get your money back if you have eggs on the recall list.
